DSL FAQ

Do I need a Static IP Address?

  • Most of our customers find they do not need a static IP address. Our personal and business DSL accounts are automatically assigned a public, unlimited IP address. This allows users to use services such as ICQ, Instant Messenger, Peer to Peer Programs, Video Conferencing, many types of VPN and most other common internet service offerings.
  • Static IP addresses are needed by users who want to host internet servers. If you need a static IP address and want to host web or other types of servers, please call our sales office so we can fulfill your needs.

Why is my connection failing?

  • Make sure you have signed up for a DSL account with FiberNet. Qwest does not always provide us enough information to activate your account for service with us and we require written confirmation of your order before we can activate your new DSL service.
  • Verify that you are using your proper DSL username, without “@fiber.net”. For example: user123 not user123@fiber.net. There should be no spaces before or within your username. Ensure that you have typed in the correct password and that your "Caps Lock" key is not turned on and you have entered no spaces. Your user and password are both case-sensitive.
  • Different types of service are not interchangeable. Dialup account usernames cannot be used for DSL and vice versa.
  • If you are certain your username and password have been entered in correctly, then call Fiber.Net at 801-223-9576. There may be a problem with your account on our end, your account may have been inactivated due to billing problems, or we may need to reset your password.

How do I get DSL?

  • We can handle the entire process for you if you call us at 801-223-9939 but you should understand that every DSL service has 2 parts to it. Qwest is the DSL line provider in most parts of Utah. Qwest provides the phone line to your house and the DSL signaling service and the equipment for your connection. This is because they own the phone system infrastructure in Utah. The second part of DSL service is the internet service provider, which is where Fiber.Net comes in. We provide the actual connection to the rest of the Internet. We also provide your email and other web services.
  • Ordering DSL can be a little complicated, so we would love to help you with the process. Please call us at 801-223-9939 and we will take care of everything for you.
  • If you prefer to handle the process yourself, remember that Qwest will need to know that you want to use Fiber.Net as your internet service provider (ISP). They may not ask you who you would like the provider to be, so don’t be afraid to speak up for what you want!

How fast is DSL?

  • Most DSL services we offer vary between 640 kilobits (kb) per second and 1.5 megabits per second. Remember, kilobytes (kB) are 8 times larger than kilobits (kb) so if your connection transfers files at 150kB per second, you are getting about the maximum on a 1.5 megabit DSL line.
  • If you connecting at a rate less than you would like, you may be able to upgrade your service. Qwest DSL lines come in a variety of speeds. Call us at 801-223-9939 and we can find out what services you have and if you can go faster!
  • One of the biggest factors in determining connection speed is the phone line connection to your home/business. Age of the telephone lines in your area, "line noise", and distance from the “Central Office” or phone provider facility can all affect your line quality. If you are concerned about the quality of your phone lines, please call you local telephone company. We can also help many times when your phone line fails to qualify for DSL service but you know others near you have DSL already. However, keep in mind that there are many factors involved and all speeds/services are not available in all areas.
  • There are several different types of DSL. We offer aDSL, sDSL and iDSL. The differences in these services exist mostly to service DSL over different phone lines but they also offer different speeds. Our sales office can help you choose which service type is the best fit for your needs.

Why don’t I qualify for DSL?

  • DSL phone line service is a way of stuffing a large amount of data on the same wires you use for traditional phone service. This means that the phone service/infrastructure has to be in good shape for DSL to work properly.
  • DSL only works over regular copper phone lines. Some areas have been provisioned by Qwest with mostly fiber optic phone systems. Some areas are serviced by coaxial cable systems such as AT&T. These areas require special provisioning by Qwest in order to provide DSL service. Many areas have had this provisioning completed but some are still in progress and a few will be done in the future.
  • The phone lines in your house or in your area may not stable. The phone lines you use can be very problematic as far as transferring data is concerned. Even if your voice conversations seem fine, phone lines can have a number of issues identifiable only by the phone line provider, which can cause DSL to have issues.
  • If you have multiple lines in your home, let us try and qualify all the numbers. Each line may behave differently during the qualification process.
