ISDN FAQ

Q: Do I need a Static IP Address?

A: Most of our customers find they do not need a static IP address. Our personal and business ISDN accounts are automatically assigned a public, unlimited IP address. This allows users to use services such as ICQ, Instant Messenger, Peer to Peer Programs, Video Conferencing, many types of VPN and most other common internet service offerings.

Static IP addresses are needed by users who want to host internet servers. If you need a static IP address and want to host web or other types of servers, please call our sales office so we can fulfill your needs.

Q: Why is my connection failing?

A: Make sure you have signed up for an ISDN account with Fiber.Net. We are not automatically informed if you have an ISDN line so you need to call our sales and service office to activate your account for ISDN and we require written confirmation of your order before we can activate your new ISDN service.

Verify that you are using your proper ISDN username, without “@fiber.net”. For example: user123 not user123@fiber.net. There should be no spaces before or within your username. Ensure that you have typed in the correct password and that your "Caps Lock" key is not turned on and you have entered no spaces. Your user and password are both case-sensitive.

Different types of service are not interchangeable. Analog 56k dialup account users cannot be used for ISDN and vice versa.

If you are certain your username and password have been entered in correctly, then call Fiber.Net at 801-223-9576. There may be a problem with your account on our end, your account may have been inactivated due to billing problems, or we may need to reset your password.

Q: How do I get ISDN?

A: We can handle the entire process for you if you call us at 801-223-9939 but you should understand that every ISDN service has 2 parts to it. Qwest is the ISDN line provider in most parts of Utah. Qwest provides the phone line to your house and the ISDN signaling service. This is because they own the phone system infrastructure in Utah. The second part of ISDN service is the internet service provider, which is where Fiber.Net comes in. We provide the actual connection to the rest of the Internet. We also provide your email and other web services. ISDN is basically a digital phone line and connects to the internet just like a regular dial up account.

Ordering ISDN can be a little complicated, so we would love to help you with the process. Please call us at 801-223-9939 and we will take care of everything for you.

If you prefer to handle the process yourself, remember that Qwest will need to know that you want to use Fiber.Net as your internet service provider (ISP). They may not ask you who you would like the provider to be, so don’t be afraid to speak up for what you want!

Q: How fast is ISDN?

A: Most ISDN services we offer connect at 64 kilobits (kb) per second, per channel. Remember, kilobytes (kB) are 8 times larger than kilobits (kb) so if your connection transfers files at 6kB per second, you are getting about the maximum on a 64 kilobit ISDN line.

If you connecting at a rate less than you would like, you may be able to upgrade your service. Qwest ISDN service has 2 lines built in which means you can dialup with both to go twice as fast. Call us at 801-223-9939 and we can find out what services you have and if you can go faster!

One of the biggest factors in determining connection speed is the phone line connection to your home/business. Age of the telephone lines in your area, "line noise", and distance from the “Central Office” or phone provider facility can all affect your line quality. If you are concerned about the quality of your phone lines, please call you local telephone company. We can also help many times when your phone line fails to qualify for ISDN service but you know others near you have ISDN already. However, keep in mind that there are many factors involved and all speeds/services are not available in all areas.

Q: Why don’t I qualify for ISDN?

A: ISDN phone line service is a way of turning one traditional analog phone line into 2 digital phone lines or channels. This means that the phone service/infrastructure has to be in good shape for ISDN to work properly. Almost any phone line can qualify for ISDN service but it is not commonly used now so it may not be available in all areas.
